Follow the Prophet

President Oaks's September 16 address at Washington National Cathedral on religious freedom, peacemaking, and finding common ground.

A recent historical event, and the forthcoming anticipated worldwide general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has reinforced to me how blessed we are to receive divinely inspired counsel from the Lord’s prophet, Dallin H. Oaks.
On 16 September 2026, the eve of Constitution Day, President Oaks delivered a landmark address on religious freedom at the Washington National Cathedral, declaring the United States Constitution a divinely inspired tool for peacemaking and finding common ground. If there was ever a time in the history of our country and the world where peacemakers and coalition builders are needed, it is now. I share with you two key statements from President Oak’s address, and invite you to view or listen to President Oaks’ address in full cathedral.org/calendar/forum-dallin-oaks/#stream.
“All of us should accept the reality that we are fellow citizens who need each other. This requires all of us to obey some laws we dislike and to live peacefully with some persons whose values differ from our own. We should make every effort to understand the experiences and concerns of others, especially when they differ from our own.”
“Knowing that we are all children of God gives us a divine vision of the worth of all others and the will and ability to rise above prejudice and racism. As I have lived for many years in different places in this nation, the Lord has taught me that it is possible to obey and seek to improve our nation’s laws and also to love our adversaries. While not easy, what makes it possible is the help of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He gave this command to love, and He promised His help as we seek to obey it.”
Brothers and Sisters, Dallin H. Oaks is the Lord’s anointed prophet for this time and season. By listening to and acting upon the counsel and teachings of President Oaks, the Lord has promised that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against you,” and that he will “disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory.” (D&C 21:6) Let us avail ourselves of the Lord’s promised blessings by heeding and acting upon the counsel of His prophet during the upcoming General Conference.

Senior Missionaries and Senior Service Missionaries

Dear Senior Brothers and Sisters,

Our dear prophet has extended an invitation to look for additional ways you can serve either from home as a service missionary or away from home as a full-time senior missionary. There are dozens and dozens of service opportunities that are available right now in our area. The Lord needs you if you have a few extra hours each week. There is also a great need in all the missions of the church. Mission presidents are praying and pleading for more seniors and senior couples to assist in this great work. President Russell M. Nelson said,

“If you are tempted to think you’re not needed, let me reassure you that you are. There is not a mission president in the Church who would not love to have additional couples serving in his mission. … Senior couples are often a literal answer to the prayers of bishops and branch presidents.

“My dear brothers and sisters, these surely are the latter days, and the Lord is hastening His work to gather Israel. That gathering is the most important thing taking place on earth today. Nothing else compares in magnitude, nothing else compares in importance, nothing else compares in majesty. And if you choose to, if you want to, you can be a big part of it. You can be a big part of something big, something grand, something majestic!”

If you are considering either serving as a service missionary in our area or would like to serve away from home but don’t know where to look to find what opportunities are available, we can help you. Please call Rick and Connie Johnson (Stake Service Missionary Specialists), 801-301-6890. We would be happy to visit over the phone or come to your home.

Six Titles of Christ: Annette Stacy on "Shepherd"

The second in our six-month series from the Stake Women's Conference: Annette Stacy shares why her favorite title for the Savior is "Shepherd."

To continue with our talks from the Stake Women’s Conference, please enjoy this excerpt from Annette Stacy. Her favorite title of Christ is “Shepherd” because of a beautiful handout given to her by an Institute teacher years ago. The story in the handout was originally published in the National Wool Grower by James K. Wallace in December 1949. This beautiful story is how Annette thinks of Him, loving her as a shepherd loves his sheep.

Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. (Psalms 23:5) “At every sheepfold there is a big earthen bowl of olive oil and a large stone jar of water. As the sheep come in for the night they are led to a gate. The shepherd lays his rod across the top of the gateway just higher than the back of his sheep. As each sheep passes in single file, he quickly examines it for briers in the eyes, snags in the cheek, or scratches. When such conditions are found, he drops the rod across the sheep’s back and it steps out of line.

“Each sheep’s wounds are carefully cleaned. Then the shepherd dips his hand into the olive oil and anoints the injury. A large cup is dipped into the jar of water, kept cool by evaporation in the unglazed pottery, and is brought out-never half full but always overflowing. The sheep will sink its nose into the water clear to the eyes, if fevered and drink until refreshed.

“When all the sheep are at rest, the shepherd lays his staff on the ground within reach in case it is needed for protection of the flock during the night, wraps himself in his heavy woolen robe and lies down across the gateway, facing the sheep, for his night’s repose.

“So,” concluded D’Alphonso, “after all the care and protection the shepherd has given it, a sheep may well soliloquize in the twilight, as translated into words by David:
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalms 23:6)

Young Women

Stake Young Women's Conference: Walk With Me

Young women and their mothers are invited to the Stake Young Women's Conference on November 21 at the stake center.

Happy Fall!!

We are looking forward to our annual Stake Young Women's Conference coming up in November. This year's theme is the 2026 youth theme, "Walk With Me."

As we look forward to our conference, we invite each of you to take a moment to reflect on your own journey with the Savior. How have you walked with him this year? What does "Walk with me" mean to you? How would you like to continue walking with him throughout the rest of this year and beyond?

We know that as we walk with the Savior, he brings us peace in a less-than-peaceful world. He gives us strength when we feel weak, comfort when we are struggling, and hope when we need it most. We testify that as we choose to walk with him, he will walk with us, and we are never alone.

We can't wait to gather together in November.

Love,
Amy, Ashlee, Deanne, and Jenny

Save the date: Stake Young Women's Conference, November 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the stake center, for all young women and their mothers.

Emergency preparedness

October Focus: Safety, Security, and Important Documents

Thank you for a great September Emergency Preparedness activity — October's focus turns to home safety, security, and important documents.

Thank you to all who participated in our September Stake Emergency Preparedness activity. We had a great turnout for our four presenters: Kathy Behling on food storage, Karl Behling on keeping the lights on during an emergency, Joe Kanis on water storage FAQs, and Robin Harker on grab-n-go bags. We're also grateful to everyone who helped with the delicious treats, made only from shelf stable ingredients and shelf stable milk options.

Our focus for October combines a couple of areas: Safety and Security, and Important Documents and Money. In addition to rotating the food, clothes, and water in your 72 hour kits each October, now is a good time to do a home safety check (see BeReady.Utah.gov for a Home Hazard Hunt). Changing the batteries in all home smoke detectors every six months can eliminate the dreaded low battery chirping in the middle of the night.

Post-emergency recovery goes much smoother if you have copies of important documents for identification and reference, both physical and electronic. Consider storing them in something fire and water proof. It's also important to have a reserve of cash in small bills in your emergency kits or another designated location.

Remember to keep up the small steps toward preparedness, and you will accomplish great things.

"Preparedness, when properly pursued, is a way of life, not a sudden, spectacular program." — Spencer W. Kimball
